The Vietnam Draft & Lottery
The U.S, like many other countries, has a draft system ( and has used a draft system ) which allows the country to legally conscript soldiers to fill the ranks of soldiers not provided by volunteer or payment. The draft was used during the revolutionary war to conscript "minute men" militia soldiers, but was deemed unconstitutional during the war of 1812. However, the draft was brought back by the selective service act in 1917, so that there was no shortage of troops during the Great War. Since then, it has been used in a number of wars, all considered "major," even in times of peace.
In Vietnam, a draft was also used. At the time which it was ipmlemented, the war had progressed to some fair extent without much publicity. However, as the war progressed further, the massive opposition to the Vietnam War focused a deal of its attention on the involutary draft. The draft began in 1969 with the implementation of the new Draft Lottery system. Under this system, groups of men born between 1945 and 1950 were assigned a number based on their date of birth by day and month. While it simplified the draft, this system did not make the draft any more morally proper, and in fact incosistency made the draft unfair, which it recieved extensive public flak for.
